Description

Collection relating to service of Captain Herbert Spencer Dickinson, 57 Battalion, At Sea and France, 1914-1917. Collection includes a handwritten copy of a narrative of the Sydney - Emden encounter and extracts from a diary. Copy probably made by Dickinson's mother in response to a request by the Memorial in 1927. Location of originals is unknown.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Served with the 57th Battalion, AIF. Killed in action at Polygon Wood, near Ypres, 26 September 1917. Accountant; of Malvern, VIC, born Childers, Gippsland, VIC; educated at Spring Road (Malvern) and at Wesley College; was a well known oarsman; enlisted in the AIF 17 August 1914 as a private and was posted to 5 Battalion; appointed Second Lieutenant after Second Battle of Krithia (May 1915); transferred to 57 Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir early in 1916; age at time of death 25.
