Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX12153 Lieutenant William Richard Bates. Collection consists of a black and white photocopy of a diary, covering the period May to October 1941 and April to May 1945. The first part of the diary commences in May 1941 with the surrender of 2/1 Battalion on Crete, and recounts Bates' experiences as a prisoner of war on Greece, and his journey across Europe to a prisoner of war camp in Lubeck in the north of Germany. The second part of the diary re-commences in April 1945 and recounts his liberation from a prisoner of war camp in Bavaria in the south of Germany. The photocopied diary is accomanied by a typed transcript. Also include are comments made by Bates on the diary of Lieutenant Maurice Grant Boydell (a fellow POW), with further description of Bates' own experiences. Boydell's diary is held at PR86/004.
