Macandie, G L (Paymaster Commander, OBE RAN)
Collection relating to the Second World War public service of Paymaster Commander George Lionel Macandie, Australian Commonwealth Naval Board, Royal Australian Navy, Australia, 1941.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Contains a 4-page typescript narrative titled "Work of the RAN" by Paymaster Commander George Lionel Macandie. The narrative offers a summary account of notable achievements by vessels and members of the Royal Australian Navy from the start of the Second World War through to mid-to-late 1941. Macandie briefly covers the actions of HMAS Stuart in the Mediterranean during the first half of 1940, HMAS Australia at Dakar in June 1940, HMAS Hobart during the evacuation of British Somaliland and HMAS Perth at the Siege of Malta in early March 1941. He subsequently devotes greater attention to the Battle of Cape Matapan in late March 1941 including the key roles of HMAS Stuart and HMAS Perth during the engagement. Macandie also highlights members of the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve awarded honours for their service during the first two years of the Second World War.
