Dallas, Roderic Stanley, DSO DSC (Major, b.1892 - d.1918)

Collection relating to the First World War service of Major Roderic Stanley “Stan” Dallas, No. 1 Naval Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service and No. 40 Squadron Royal Air Force, France, 1915-1918.

Wallet 1 of 1 - The collection consists of eight letters written from Dallas to his father Peter MacArthur Dallas, and a handwritten excerpt of Major Dallas’ flying logbook to the date of 20 March 1916. Additionally, the collection contains ration cards and travel passes.

Dallas writes about joining the Royal Naval Air Service, and serving with the No. 1 Squadron in France, aerial combats and a low altitude reconnaissance mission in which he was wounded. He also discusses his promotions, first to Flight Lieutenant and then to Squadron Leader, which became Major when he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and the extra duties and responsibilities that came with these new roles. Additionally, he discusses dining with Prince Alexander of Teck, being decorated by King George V, and meeting Sir Thomas Bilbe Robinson in London. In his final letter, dated 7 May 1918, Dallas wrote that that he was proud to fight for his family and country and willing to fight to the death. Dallas was killed in action on 1 June 1918.
