Studio portrait of 9924 Lance Corporal Norman Meston, 9th Field Company Engineers from Lewisham, NSW. A 34 year old fitter prior to enlisting on 30 March 1916, he embarked for overseas service as a sapper aboard HMAT Ajana (A31) on 5 July 1916 from Sydney. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in November 1916. While serving on the Western Front, he was promoted to lance corporal in June 1917 and to corporal in December 1918. He was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous courage on the night of 6 April 1918 at Bullecourt during the construction of a barrel pier bridge across the Somme River. Corporal Meston MM arrived back in Australia on 10 August 1919.
