Studio portrait of 6848 Private (Pte) John Yates, 5th Battalion from Moonee Ponds, Victoria. A 29 year old railway fireman prior to enlisting on 1 September 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 22nd Reinforcements from Melbourne on 25 October 1916 aboard HMAT Ulysses. After further training in England, he joined the 5th Battalion in France in March 1917 and died of wounds received in action on 29 April 1917 at Lagnicourt. Pte Yates is buried in the Morchies British Cemetery, France.
