Portrait of 4548 Private (Pte) James Gordon Wells, 21st Battalion from Childers, Victoria. A 30 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 23 November 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 29 March 1916 aboard RMS Orontes. He served with the 21st Battalion in Belgium and then in France where he was killed in action near Fricourt on 29 December 1916. Pte Wells is buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
