Studio portrait of 4734 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Robert Montgomery, 24th Battalion from North Melbourne. A 40 year old butter maker prior to enlisting on 19 February 1916, he embarked for overseas service as a Private with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 4 April 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in September 1916. After being promoted to Lance Corporal on 19 May 1917, he was killed in action at Daisy Wood near Ypres, Belgium on 9 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. A memorial stone was erected in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Presbyterian Compartment to commemorate the death of L Cpl Montgomery and his brother Private Alexander Leslie Montgomery who was killed in action in Belgium on 25 September 1917.
