Studio portrait of Corporal Charles Stewart Mitchell, 5th Battalion from St Kilda, Victoria. A 24 year old public servant prior to enlistment on 11 May 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on 2 October 1916 aboard HMAT Nestor. He was wounded in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium and evacuated to England for medical treatment. He died of his wounds on 3 October 1917 and is buried in the Norwich Cemetery, Norfolk, UK.
