Portrait of 3414 Gunner (Gnr) Henry ‘Harry’ Foster Midgley, 11th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) from Bendigo, Victoria. A 21 year old rubber worker prior to enlisting on 14 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service as a Private with the 11th Reinforcements of the 14th Infantry Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 11 October 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he spent six weeks in hospital before rejoining the 14th Battalion. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the 46th Battalion and then to the 12th FAB where he was mustered as a Gunner and posted to the 48th Battery in March 1916. He went with them in June to France where he was transferred to the 24th FAB and then shortly afterwards to the 11th FAB and posted to the 42nd Battery. Gnr Midgley was wounded in action near Messines, Belgium on 6 June 1917 and after receiving medical treatment, returned to the 11th FAB three weeks later. He was again wounded in action on 1 August 1917 near Dicksbusch, Belgium and evacuated to the 41st Casualty Clearing Station at Godewaersvelde, France where he died from his wounds on 2 August 1917. Gnr Midgley is buried in the Godewaersvelde British Cemetery.
