Portrait of 6310 Private (Pte) Herbert Mills Locke McGregor, 14th Battalion from Armadale, Victoria. An 18 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 6 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 20th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Sydney (A15) on 7 September 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in January 1917 and was wounded and captured by the Germans at Reincourt on 11 April. While being held as a prisoner of war at Munster Larger, Hannover, Germany, he died from his wounds on 2 May 1917. After the war, his body was exhumed from the Munster Camp Prisoner of War Cemetery and re-interred in the Hamburg Cemetery, Germany. His brother, Angus Bartlett Clarence McGregor, Merchant Navy was a wireless operator onboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) and was killed when the ship was sunk by an enemy submarine on 10 July 1917 off Bantry Bay, Ireland.
