Portrait of 1358 Private (Pte) Arthur James Ledwidge, 13th Battalion from Carrathool, NSW. A 21 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 10 November 1914, he embarked for overseas with H Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 22 December 1914. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 28 April 1915 and originally buried on the first hill overlooking the landing place in a grave marked with a wooden cross. He was later re-buried at Beach Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brothers who also served were 1152 Pte Michael John Ledwidge, Army Provost Corps and 3687 Pte Frank Bartel Ledwidge, 7th Light Horse Regiment (he also served in the Second World War and died as a POW at Sandakan, Borneo on 12 March 1945). His cousins who served were: 3408 Pte Frederick Charles Ledwidge, 56th Battalion; 1251 Driver Caleb Francis Ledwidge, 10th Field Artillery Brigade; 1370 Pte Walter Stanley Ledwidge, 7th Battalion; and 1259 Pte Percy John Ledwidge, 30th Battalion who all returned to Australia.
