Studio portrait of 5701 Private (Pte) Robert Arthur Francis, 48th Battalion. A farmer from Port Lincoln, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Francis, along with his brother 5700 Pte John Bungay Francis, embarked with the 18th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Barambah on 27 June 1916. After transferring to the 48th Battalion, he was killed in action in France, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. Pte John Francis had previously been killed in action in Belgium.
