Description

Portrait of 3681 Private (Pte) John Hubert Armstrong, 60th Battalion from Richmond, Victoria. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 10 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 12th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 23 November 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 59th Battalion and then shortly afterwards to the 60th Battalion and went with them to France on 29 June 1916. Pte Armstrong was reported missing on 19 July 1916 and later confirmed to have been killed in action and buried in the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. After the attack at Fromelles many bodies were found on the battlefield and could not be identified so were buried in the cemetery and their names inscribed on the memorial. His brother 3350 Pte David Charles Armstrong, 58th Battalion was killed in action in Belgium on 8 March 1918 [see images H05935 and DA18126] and his brother 2630 Pte James Stanley Armstrong, 59th Battalion served overseas and returned to Australia.
