BASAMA-LAE AREA. NEW GUINEA. 1944-07-13. KING BUMBU, HEREDITERY CHIEF OF THE HUON GULF NATIVES. KING BUMBU WAS ARRESTED BY THE JAPANESE FOR HIS REFUSAL TO ASSIST THEM DURING THEIR OCCUPATION OF THE AREA. HE WAS TAKEN TO SALAMAUA BY HIS CAPTORS, WHO TIED HIM TO A TREE FOR TWO DAYS WITHOUT FOOD OR WATER. HIS DAUGHTER HAD MEANWHILE FOLLOWED HIM AND MANAGED TO CUT HIM FREE DURING AN ALLIED AIR RAID - BOTH SUCCEEDED IN ESCAPING INTO THE BUSH.
