“An Australian bringing in a wounded comrade to hospital. Notwithstanding the unhappy situation, they joked as they made their way down from the front. In the distance can be seen North Beach, running towards Suvla.” (G00599 original caption)
“The irrepressible Australians at Anzac. One of them bringing in a wounded comrade.” (H10363 original caption)
“An Australian carrying a wounded comrade on his shoulders on Walkers Ridge down to a medical aid post. The men were cracking jokes as they made their way down from the front.” (Q 13622 Imperial War Museum's original Admiralty caption)
This photograph was stated by Charles Bean to have been staged by the photographer. It was a re-enactment of an event frequently seen. The man carrying his comrade was identified in the 1920s as Lance 1353 Corporal Clarence Simpson Elliott, C Company, 2nd Battalion. He has also been identified as 913 Private Frederick John Schenscher, 27th Battalion, who was awarded a DCM for rescuing wounded in France in 1917.
