Description
Near Villers-Bretonneux, France. 2 May 1918. Australians in a support trench protected by newly erected barbedwire entanglements, near Villers-Bretonneux. The smoke above the village is from a burning building set on fire by shells. Shellfire in this area was almost continuous. A burst had occurred near the trench shown just before the picture was taken and one wounded man is seen being helped out. By way of contrast another of the party is seen calmly taking a siesta on the parapet under the shade of an umbrella salvaged from the village.
