Description
Anakan (Anganan) (Aungganuang), Burma. c. September 1945. Members of the War Graves Commission survey party whose task was to locate prisoner of war (POW) cemeteries and grave sites along the Burma-Thailand railway. They also took the opportunity to recover equipment and documents which had been secretly buried, by senior POW officers, in the graves of deceased POWs. Here, they are clearing the way into the cemetery at the 105 kilometre Ankanan camp site. This was situated 105 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat, or 310 kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk). This heavy undergrowth had all grown back in the eighteen months since the area had been evacuated, when it was virtually clear of vegetation. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
