Description
The railway station at Kanchanaburi (formerly identified as Ban Pong, five kilometres from Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk) the starting point of the Burma-Thailand railway). Those prisoners of war (POWs) who travelled by train to Thailand from Singapore, detrained at Ban Pong. From there they began their move to their work camps along the railway site. Some travelled short distances by truck, but most walked. "F" Force, for example, were forced to walk approximately 300 kilometres over a period of twenty days. Most marches took place at night, to avoid the extreme daytime temperatures. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
