Description
Tamarkan, Thailand. c. October 1945. The monument erected by the Japanese near the Tamarkan prisoner of war (POW) camp, in memory of those who died during the construction of the Burma-Thailand railway. The central column was for Japanese; the corner structures for Australian, British, American, Dutch POWs and Asian civilians. The Japanese used British POWs to construct the memorial, which was opened with much pomp and ceremony on 21 March 1944. Tamarkan is fifty five kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), five kilometres north of Kanchanaburi, or 375 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
