Description
Tarsau (Tarsoe), Thailand. 1943. Close up of an advanced tropical ulcer on the leg of a prisoner of war (POW). Tarsau, now known as Nam Tok, is 130 kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or 284 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. It was used by the Japanese as both a staging camp for POWs moving north to work on railway construction, and a base hospital during the period November 1942 to April 1944. During this period 15,029 sick passed through it, of whom 806 died. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
