Description

Turkish prisoners captured by the Anzac Mounted Division filling their water bottles, and washing at an ancient aqueduct. While Allenby's main strength was thrown against the Seventh and Eighth Turkish armies (on the left centre), 'Chaytor's Force' (composed of the Anzac Mounted Division, the 20th Indian Infantry Brigade, two battalions of Jews, and two battalions of British West Indians) had been left to hold the Jordan Valley, on the right. When the overthrow of the Seventh and Eighth Armies was assured, General Chaytor struck across the Jordan in pursuit of the retiring Fourth Turkish Army. Amman was successfully assailed on September 25, and in this and the subsequent fighting upwards of 11,000 prisoners were captured.
