Description
HMAS Australia, with her 8 inch guns trained toward Guadalcanal, framed under the barrels of HMAS Hobart's forward guns. Rear Admiral V A C Crutchley VC RN, flying his flag on HMAS Australia, commanded the task force that included Squadron X, the transports that carried the US Marines that landed on the Guadalcanal beaches on 7 July 1943. This photograph was likely taken in the early morning of that day.
