Studio portrait of Corporal (Cpl) Oswin Kenneth Sanderson, 2/7th Cavalry Regiment, of Parkes, ...
Description
Studio portrait of Corporal (Cpl) Oswin Kenneth Sanderson, 2/7th Cavalry Regiment, of Parkes, NSW. He was a labourer prior to enlisting at Wandoan, Qld, on 12 June 1940. He was killed on 19 December 1942 in an attack on the Japanese in Papua when the man in front of him was shot when a machine gun opened fire. Cpl Sanderson and another soldier then estimated that the machine gun position was very close and manned by only two Japanese soldiers, so they decided to attack it. Cpl Sanderson ran forward, and before the other soldier could join him, he had attacked the two Japanese soldiers and was killed in the following fight. He was posthumously Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished services in the South West Pacific Area.
