Studio portrait of four allied Prisoners of War (POW) at Soltau POW camp, Germany. Identified standing on the left is 6465 Private (Pte) William Bradbury, 16th Battalion, from Perth, Western Australia. The handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads ¿To Miss Chomley, With my very best wishes from your sincere friend No 6465 W. Bradbury, 16 Batt Australians. The other comrades are one Serb an two Russens [sic].¿ Pte Bradbury enlisted on 26 April 1916 at the age of 41 and embarked for overseas on 13 October 1916 aboard HMAT Suffolk. He was captured at Riencourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW in Soltau, Germany. On 29 July 1917 he wrote "I am out of hospital now am working. I am in good health. My wound healed up good. I came out of hospital on the 1st of June." Pte Bradbury was repatriated to England on 26 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 2 June 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
