Collection relating to the service of O3485 Squadron Leader (later Wing Commander) Reginald 'Reg' Hackshall as a United Nations Military Observer and Military Executive Liaison Officer in the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia), Java, 1948-1949.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Consists of two folders containing copies of a diary and documents related to Hackshall's service as a United Nations Military Observer and Military Executive Liaison Officer with the United Nations Good Offices Committee in Indonesia from 1948 to 1949.
Folder 1 of 2 - Contains a photocopy of the diary Hackshall maintained during his deployment to Indonesia. The diary contains entries from 26 November 1948 to 23 March 1949, in which Hackshall details his daily routine, interactions with other officers, recreational activities, meetings between Dutch and Republican delegations, and confrontations between the two forces. The diary also contains lists of personnel, appointments, reminders, and notes.
Folder 2 of 2 - Consists of copies of reports, instructions, news clippings and correspondence relating to Hackshall's duties, and later return to military service in Australia. The folder includes reports on the Committee of Good Offices, directives issued to the observers, reports by Hackshall on the situation in Indonesia, the movement of civilians and the demilitarized zone, and correspondence concerning pay and reimbursement for equipment. The folder also includes a character reference written for Hackshall on his retirement from the Royal Australian Air Force in 1965, and two letters written to Hackshall in the 1980s from friends in Indonesia.
