Description
A United States (US) manufactured M16 anti personnel (AP) mine. These AP mines are designed to 'jump' and explode between one and two metres above the ground. The mine is triggered when one of the three wire rods (top) are trodden on or brushed against. M16 mines can also be rigged with a trip wire which connects to the release pin, (located below the wire rods). This particular example has also been booby trapped with an M26 grenade (bottom) as an anti lift device, which was used to deter Viet Cong fighters from recovering the mine for use against friendly troops. These mines were used by US and Australian forces during the Vietnam war.
