Description
Somme, France. September 1916. One of the first tanks to be used in action - a British Mark 1 Male tank, C5 'Creme de Menthe', commanded by Captain Inglis, with one of its rudder wheels shot away but appearing to still be moving. On the right is a line of infantry advancing in open order. The appearance of a similar photograph in the 'Daily Mirror' on 22 November 1916 was the first time that the British public had seen the new invention. (Donor G. Henderson)
