413968 Flight Lieutenant William George Narjel Crosby, enlisted in the RAAF as an airman on 10 October 1941 after 6 months service in the army. He qualified as a navigator after training in Victoria, Canada, England and Scotland and was commissioned in September 1942. In in March 1943 he was posted to 70 Squadron RAF (Wellington bombers) in the Middle East. Crosby flew as a navigator and pathfinder on forty night operations in North Africa and Italy, including missions against Syracusa, Naples, Salerno, Rome and Pisa. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. Later in 1944 Crosby ransferred as an instructor to the Operational Training Unit at Qastina, Palestine. His service was terminated at his own requeston 29 June 1945. Note that Crosby gave his Africa and Italy Stars to a collector and they are not with his medal group.
