Los Negros, Admiralty Islands, New Guinea. June 1944. An aerial view of the Momote airfield and aircraft dispersal areas viewed from the south and looking northwards across the airfield area to Hyane Harbour. The runway bearings were 150 degrees/330 degrees Magnetic. Both the earlier Japanese airfield and the runway used by the US Army Air Force and RAAF were constructed in what had been the Momote coconut plantation. RAAF units occupied all of the area adjacent to the near shoreline at Southeast Point. They included No. 73 Wing Headquarters and its three fighter squadrons (i.e. Nos. 76, 77 and 79 Squadron RAAF), No. 114 Fighter Control Unit, No. 14 Wireless Telegraphy Unit, No. 10 Signals Unit, No. 27 Air Stores Park. No. 79 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF's camp was located among the palms of Momote plantation behind the cleared ground at the far left of the shoreline.
