At sea. 31 August 1945. HMAS Kapunda (one of two escort ships) pulled up alongside the starboard side of SS Joseph E. Carrigan to assist with steering the ship to Labuan after it hit a mine en route to Borneo. One officer was killed instantly when a lifeboat fell on him and several other men were wounded in the resulting explosion. (Donor R. Fullford)
