Khaki canvas carrier for mess tin: Private Alexander Donald Arthur, 14th Light Trench Mortar Battery, AIF
Kidney shaped khaki canvas carrier for Dismounted Service Pattern Australian army steel mess tin. The top flap is secured with a metal button at the front of the carrier. A pair of leather slides and a suspension ring are rivetted to the back. Marked 'A D ARTHUR 1751'.
This khaki canvas carrier was used to hold a dismounted service pattern mess tin. It was designed to attach to Pattern 1908 Web Equipment. Mess tins were an essential piece of equipment in a soldier’s field kit. The tin and lid were used to cook, boil water, and as an eating utensil in the field. This canvas carrier was used by 1751 Private Alexander Donald Arthur to hold his mess tin during his service with the AIF during the First World War. Arthur enlisted on 19 June 1916 and served overseas 14th Trench Mortar Battery. He returned to Australia on 23 June 1919.
