Dismounted service pattern kidney shaped Australian army steel mess tin base without lid. A long wire handle is attached to the sides and folded to the rear.

History / Summary

Mess tins were an essential piece of equipment in a soldier’s field kit. They were used to cook, boil water, and as an eating utensil in the field. This Australian army mess tin was used by 5388A Corporal John O'Donohue during his service with the AIF during the First World War. He enlisted on 19 January 1916 and served overseas with 9 and 25 Battalions. He returned to Australia on 1 January 1919.
