Studio portrait of 130 Private (Pte) Henry (Harry) Makin, 36th Battalion from Summer Hill, NSW. A 23 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 8 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with A Company from Sydney aboard HMAT Beltana (A72) on 13 May 1916. After a short period in the UK, he proceeded to France in November. Pte Makin was killed on 4 January 1917 when a shell hit the building where he was working behind the lines. He is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
