Description

At this operational base in the north, RAAF bomber crews flying American Lockheed Hudson light bombers prepare for an attack on Japanese bases in the Pacific. The pilot runs up an engine for checking before take-off. The bomb bay doors are still open. This Hudson, (constructor's no 6478) is A16-227, a No. 2 Squadron RAAF aircraft which crashed on 1 July 1943. It had been carrying out an anti submarine patrol for a small convoy consisting of the 'Bathurst' class minesweeper HMAS Latrobe, merchant cargo vessel SS Matthew Flinders and ammunition supply issuing ship SS Darvel. At the end of this mission, it crash landed at Millingimbi, where it was written off and converted to components. The crew (Coleman, Baulch, Craig, Evans and Dixon) were uninjured.
