Unidentified men of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), gather in small groups in shallow dugouts on a hillside, during a pause in the fighting. They are taking time to rest, read newspapers, eat rations and talk. The steep hill has been cleared of trees, and the lower edges of the dugouts are reinforced with rocks.
