Description
A barge seen from the front shows mortar being prepared in position on barge. A new assault invasion course for mortar bomb companies is in progress at Madang. The mortars are used, from small landing barges whilst approaching the beachhead. The lower deck of the landing craft is reinforced with sandbags and coconut logs and the mortar set up on top of the barge in a fixed position and angle. Sighting is accomplished by steering the barge directly at the targets. For this purpose the helmsman has two sighting sticks attached to the drop ramp.
