Description
A German freighter (possibly the Dutch Amerskerk or the Belgian E Boat depot ship, Gustav Nachtigall) smokes and burns after being heavily damaged by Beaufighter strike aircraft from the Langham Wing (RAF Coastal Command). This convoy was hit in the vicinity of the coastal town of Ameland, Holland, by rocket and torpedo armed Beaufighters which included 11 Beaufighters from 455 Squadron, RAAF. The strike was led by Wing Commander Gadd, 144 Squadron, RAF, and it was escorted by ten Mustangs from No 316 (Polish) Squadron, RAF. The Amerskerk, Gustav Nachtigall and a German Minesweeper (M103) were sunk during the raid.
