Australian-made stock saddle officially supplied to troops serving in the Boer War, 1901
Description
Brown leather Poley saddle with white cloth (replacement) lining over original white serge lining. Both flaps stamped inside with broad arrows and '01'. Saddle is unmounted.
History / Summary
Saddle shortages were acute during the Boer War and in the absence of enough military 1890 pattern saddles, Australian made Poley saddles (a light stock saddle) were ordered and supplied to Australian troops. They are distinguished from other Poley saddles of the period by government acceptance markings inside the flaps and by their white lining (civilian Poleys were lined with yellow or blue serge).
