Description
Forest of Freteval, France. April 1980. Noel Eliot stands at the probable site of the first camp in the forest where eventually 152 allied airmen were hiding waiting for liberation. The camps were part of the Comet (Comete) escape route set up by the Underground which included two camps in the Freteval Forest. Nine Australian airmen hid in this camp, including 415242 Flight Lieutenant Noel Stirling Eliot, pilot of No. 218 Squadron RAF, who had escaped by parachute from his Stirling bomber which was shot down on 1 May 1944 while on a bombing raid over the Chambly railway marshalling yards, north of Paris.
