Studio portrait of 1024 Private (Pte) Joseph Thomas Young, 25th Battalion from Chatsworth Island, NSW. An 18 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 13 February 1915, he embarked for overseas with D Company of the 25th Battalion from Brisbane on 29 June 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. After serving at Gallipoli where he took ill, he embarked for England where he suffered another period of illness before arriving in France to re-join the 25th Battalion on 24 August 1916. He was wounded in action on 4 November 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After recovering, he returned to his unit on 9 February 1918 only to be killed in action at Morlancourt, France on 10 June 1918. Pte Young is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
