Photographs relating to the service of Private Cyril Roger Cooke, 4th Field Ambulance.
Description
Portrait of 5512 Private Edwin Augustus Esdaile, 4th Field Ambulance (left) and 16 Private Cyril Roger Cooke, 4th Field Ambulance (right). Pte Esdaile of Fitzroy, Victoria, worked as a fine etcher before enlisting on 4 May 1915. Esdaile was killed in action in Belgium on 21 October 1917 at the age of 25 by a shell while carrying a wounded soldier. He is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Lijssenthoek, Flanders, Belgium. A chemist's assistant from Maldon, Victoria, Pte Cooke enlisted on 4 May 1915 and embarked on board RMS Mooltan on 18 May 1915. Cooke served as a stretcher bearer and was awarded a 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Cooke returned to Australia on 14 February 1919 before being discharged.
