Private issue backpack in Auscam fabric : Lance Corporal S McAliney, 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment
Privately purchased large metal framed backpack in 'Auscam' pattern camouflage canvas fabric. The pack has four pockets on the front, a top with drawstring closure, and an elasicated flap. It has had some additional black webbing straps sewn onto the sides, and a carry handle at the top. Loose webbing straps on the belt have been secured with black gaffer tape. A white square, with a red circle at its centre, has been painted on the back of the pack. 'PARNABY 556481' has been crossed out on the top of the pack.
Associated with 185458 Lance Corporal Shannon McAliney. He was accidentally killed in Somalia on 2 April 1993, whilst on patrol with D Company, 1 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), on Operation Solace. Operation Solace was the Australian Defence Force's main contribution to humanitarian efforts in Somalia in 1992. The operation centred around the deployment of 1RAR Battalion Group to Humanitarian Relief Sector Baidoa in the Southern Central region of Somalia.
