Description

Handwoven, rectangular, white, linen table napkin. It has a cream embroidered alternating edge, and a rectanglar, diagonal cutwork check pattern inset panel.

History / Summary

Associated with Mary Frances 'Molly' Shrimpton who joined the War Widows Guild in Melbourne in 1943, and was later to be its President for twenty years. Married at Scotch College Chapel, Victoria on 30th October 1941, her husband, VX46500 Lieutenant Courtney Shrimpton, an original member of the 2/3 Independent Company, died of wounds in New Guinea on 22nd August 1943. He is buried at Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery.

Molly Shrimpton funded 'The Shrimpton Collection' of Australian Art at Scotch College in memory of her husband, and her son James, who died in 1988. This table napkin was handwoven by her in 1950.
