Description

There are many Buddhist and Shinto shrines in Tokyo, somewhat like parish churches. At the end of the Asakusa shopping centre stands the Kannon Temple, headquarters of the Shokannon sect of Buddhists dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Shopping crowds pause to make a prayer by throwing a coin wrapped in "prayer" paper into a box beneath the incense burners. The unidentified Australian soldiers in the foreground are looking on.
