Description
Members of the 170th Independent Mortar Battery Royal Artillery prepare to turn away and block their ears, as a soldier (left) loads and fires a 4.2 inch mortar. He is standing on metal mortar bomb boxes to give him added height to load the projectile. Note the summer bush hats the soldiers are wearing. Projectiles and packing tubes lie on the ground around the mortar. 4.2 inch mortars can fire high explosive ammunition, as well as white phosphorus projectiles to create smoke screens, and luminescent rounds. This mortar is fitted to a mobile baseplate for towing behind a vehicle. The battery are in support of the 29th British Infantry Brigade.
