Morotai Channel, Netherlands East Indies. 26 August 1945. Major General Harry H. Johnson (right), Commander of the 93rd Division and all US installations on Morotai, examining a Japanese Officer's sword on board a PT Boat of the US Navy's 11th Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron (11th MTB). Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Ishii, Commander of the 32nd Division and all other Japanese Forces in the Halmahera Islands, and some of his staff met with Major General Johnson to discuss arrangements for the Japanese surrender. Lt Gen Ishii was accompanied by four high ranking Japanese Army and Navy Officers, two junior Officers (one an interpreter) and two other ranks personnel. This was the first peaceful face to face meeting with the Japanese Armed Forces. After these discussions, the Japanese party were escorted to Morotai for the formal surrender ceremony. Note the 11th MTB insignia, incorporating a black panther, on part of the boat near where Major General Johnson is standing. (Donor H. Kennare)
