Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of Flying Officer John (Tim) Alexander Wall, RAAF. Collection includes Observer's and Air Gunner's Flying Log Book, belonging to John Alexander Wall. The log book records details of flights flown by Wall between October 1941 and July 1945, including training flights with the Air Empire Training Scheme and operational flights over Europe and in the Pacific. During his extensive service, Wall flew as a rear gunner and wireless officer with 408 Squadron RAF, 78 Squadron RAAF, and 2 Squadron RAAF in a variety of aircraft including Halifax Bombers, Beauforts, DC4s, Mitchell Bombers and Liberators. The collection also contains a small collection of service papers and newspaper clippings. Added to the collection in May 2014 were three copies (two typed and one photocopy of handwritten original) of a four page chapter from a manuscript written by Wall. It details some of his experiences while serving, including his involvement in a mission on 8 December 1942 near Marseilles where he helped to lay mines (also known as "gardening").
