GILBERT, Maric, J (Eddie) (Private, b: 1921)
Description
Typescript memoir entitled: "Ambon 1941 -1945 Recollections of a Survivor". This memoir provides a well written, observant and detailed recollection of Gilbert's experience as a prisoner of war on Ambon. Taken prisoner in February 1942, Gilbert survived three and a half years of captivity, under the harsh conditions imposed by the Japanese. Gilbert's account, however, also covers the lighter side of captivity, the concerts organised by prisoners, ingenous ways of smuggling food into the camp and the occasional laugh at their captors' expense.
