Jean O'Neill as a member of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC), 1953-1977, interviewed by Jan Bassett
Enlisted 13 January 1953 in Brisbane, discharged 12 January 1977 in Sydney; lists ranks and postings during career; early life; trained in civilian nursing at Cairns, Queensland; after army training at Puckapunyal in Victoria posted to British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) hospital at Kure in Japan in April 1954 where she worked as a theatre sister; sent to Korea in September 1954 and served with the 25th Canadian FDS in Tokchon; describes trip to Korea; discusses living and working conditions at Kure and Tokchon; description of casualties; working relationship between Australian, Canadian and British nurses; supplies and equipment; food; recreation; returned to Australia in 1956; from 1963-65 posted to Malaya; worked at British Military hospital in Kingrara then posted out to MRS at Malacca; nursing families of military personnel in Malaya; periods of extra study and teaching; discusses attitude to nurses carrying arms; advances in medical treatment as a result of war; triage; in 1968 led the second team of nurses sent to Vietnam; describes conditions and quality of personnel; discusses men joining the RAANC.
